Massage

Massage is a form of physiotherapy used in Bell's disease to improve blood flow and condition of the muscles and speed up recovery.Massage techniques are also different in the earlier and later stages of facial palsy. In the first weeks of the disease, it is important to stimulate the muscles on the affected side (in combination with passive exercises), and let the muscles on the healthy part of the face relax. During massage, the patient tries to maximally relax the healthy side of the face.

After 10-12 weeks since onset of Bell's disease, we often see the first symptoms of synkinesis. From this moment on, massage focuses on the trigger points and on preventing muscle shortening. Stretching and relaxing massage techniques are important here.
